Senjulu Denis, a self-taught artist from Bweyogerere, Uganda, discovered his passion for painting seven years ago and has worked full-time for the past four years. Raised by a single mother, his early experience as a gallery assistant and mentorship from established artists shaped his vision, while the sale of his first painting fuelled his dedication to art.
Denis’s abstract compositions draw on his Buganda heritage, using bark cloth, patchwork techniques, and serene, dream-inspired palettes to explore community, identity, and unity. His work celebrates human diversity and communal spirit, reflecting both the challenges and beauty of everyday life. His pieces are featured at Umoja Art Gallery in Kampala and across East Africa.

An Unforgettable Hero
This artwork reimagines a pivotal moment: King Muteesa II’s refusal of the British plan to merge Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika — a stand to protect Buganda’s autonomy. In bold, collage-like layers that mirror the political fractures of the time, the King stands beside his throne as a symbol of dignity, resolve, and patriotic defiance. His exile and resistance helped ignite the movement toward Uganda’s independence.
