Charles Kamya

Centennial Art Tribute

Charles Kamya, born in Kampala in 1983, is a self-taught sculptor who began his practice by carving a chair from a dry root at age fifteen. Mentored early by John Keller of Gallery Cafe, he transforms found and natural materials into sculptures that explore resilience, community, and cultural identity.

His work blends organic forms with meticulous craft, merging traditional aesthetics and contemporary technique. Through his art, Kamya seeks to challenge perceptions of value and beauty, highlighting the potential for transformation inherent in humble materials. His sculptures evoke a dialogue between nature and humanity, often featuring abstracted forms and intricate textures that invite tactile and visual exploration.

Since debuting in the 1999 Hope exhibition, opened by the American ambassador, Kamya has gained recognition across Africa and beyond. His work now graces both public spaces and private collections, standing as a testament to his journey from a boy with a vision to a distinguished artist shaping the narrative of contemporary African sculpture.
